Baby Proofing Guide – Think Like Your Baby Would

When you take on the task of baby proofing your home, you need to start looking at each and every thing in your house in the manner that your baby would. It is like a mission that you are on in which you have to put yourself in the shoes of the child and start to think of how you can go about the baby proofing task. Look at everything with the curiosity that a child has and the skepticism that an investigator shows. Get down on your hands and knees and look at everything from a new perspective – the baby’s!

The Baby’s Perspective - How They Look at Things

One aspect of the manner in which a bay looks at the world is extreme curiosity. It is important to understand that all the objects that he sees around are new and being viewed for the first time. If he has been in a room with an electrical socket and not approached, it does not mean that it is not an interesting thing. It just means that he has not gotten to it as yet.

To give you the baby’s take on a few things, consider the below mentioned categories.

-          Electrical Sockets – Holes that urge you to check them out! Electrical sockets can be a fun thing for the child who would like to see what’s inside even though the last thing that you want them to do is to actually find out. Cover the sockets with sliding covers that can be latched or get plastic plugs that can be inserted into the sockets for safety.

-          Cleaning agents – Colorful liquids and attractive cans that seem to shriek out for attention! Ensure that all the cleaning agents that you use in your house are natural products that are not harmful. If you cannot ensure that completely, make sure that the products that can prove to be poisonous should be stored out of reach in cabinets that cannot be reached even with the help of a stool or a climbing prop.

-          Small objects – Can I actually taste it? Children have an inclination to put everything that they see in their mouths for a full sensory experience of an object. While this should not be allowed for any product, the small objects can cause choking hazard. The standard rule to decide whether something is dangerous or not is to use the toilet paper test. If it fits into the hole of a toilet paper roll, it is too dangerous.

-          Stairs Safety – Mom is somewhere down there. How does one navigate this uneven surface? Safety gates for the top and bottom of the staircase are must. You should opt for those that allow you to open them with one hand or even without the use of hands.

-          Sharp objects – Now, this is a shiny thing! All knives, razors, scissors and nail files should be stored in places that cannot be accessed by the baby. Either remove the cutlery from the drawers below the hot stove and store them in the cabinet above or get baby proof latches or locks for the kitchen drawers.

-          Hot surfaces – Red and glowing and it seems to be warm too! The baby does not know that red hot surfaces can scald and burn the skin. Initially the warm feeling is good and then it is too late to stop. Create a fence or a guard around all hot surfaces in your home. Avoid the use of table lamps that get too warm and ensure that the water heater is always set to a moderate temperature.

-          Electrical Cords – What will happen if I pull this thing? Use cord retractors to secure hanging cords or ensure that they are out of reach.

Looking at things from a baby’s perspective will give a fair amount of insight into what can be going on in the mind of your loved one. So think like him to keep him safe.
